Content is overshadowed by comparison and belief you are better than others. I struggled watching my mom growing up. I always loved when she was able to own expensive brands as it resembled an item or luxury she was never able to reach when she was younger. Yet, I struggled when she constantly felt she had to compare herself to others back home who had better bags than she did and her confidence went down
Being in America, we are believed to live a much better life. In some cases this may be true, but in others, family still struggle regardless of leaving their home country. Many families send boxes full of goods and hand-me-downs to family back home. For some, this means we have to sacrifice a lot of things we own and love as we are seen to have more and "will always have more". If we refused, this can be seen as selfish. The feeling that we must give away what we have constantly, feels as though nothing we own will ever be ours.
